A defensive investor is seeking an investment where their capital is unlikely to fall significantly in value over the short term, although this, of course, cannot be guaranteed. Due to their relative volatililty, shares are not deemed to be appropriate for this investor, and holdings in commercial property, gilts and higher quality bonds are suggested instead. The return is likely to be similar to that of a high street deposit account and, as a result, the defensive investor runs the risk that inflation may reduce the value of his investment in the long term.
