Ethical Pensions

Preserve your ethical standards, and your living standards with ethical pensions

Ethical pensions may be personal pensions, or pensions provided in the workplace, but as ethical investments, all seek to provide some element of pension saving with conscience, through socially responsible investments which benefit the environment, favour enlightened labour and human rights practices, or avoids unethical products, services and activities.

Would you like to save towards your retirement in an ethical pension? Perhaps you are unsure about just how ethical a company is or maybe you feel the returns may not be attractive? Why not speak to our investment team about your requirements for trusted advice?

Ethical pensions for your retirement

As final salary pension schemes are increasingly wound down, and more workers are investing in defined contribution pension schemes, the individual’s influence over where his pension savings are invested has dramatically increased. In this day and age, research shows that most of us are interested in investing ethically where we can, and ethical pension funds have become an attractive option for many. It would seem that there is a general awareness that using ethical investment funds in our pensions planning can not only make a difference to society and the environment, but can also provide increased peace of mind in our retirement.

Demand for ethical investments in general has exploded during the past decade, and there are currently over 90 funds using ethical investment criteria in the UK with some £7bn invested, compared with just £1.5bn ten years ago.

With almost 80% of UK adults claiming to live a green lifestyle, and 49% of UK investors favouring an ethical pension fund for their retirement planning, investor expectations and desires have altered dramatically in the same timeframe.

In fact, in autumn 2010 there was public outcry when it was revealed at over £50m of public sector pension funds were invested in the tobacco industry, with many workers claiming that they would not choose to place their pensions savings in those industries regarded as unethical. Another unexpected benefit of ethical pensions in the same period was that the absence of oil & gas stocks in ethical pension funds shielded them from the (financial) devastation caused to traditional pensions, when BP’s share price more than halved, due to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Ethical pensions are now available from many of the leading pension companies, as well as from a number of boutique ethical investment companies.
