Where does Quadris invest?

The Quadris Environmental Fund invests in Floresteca SA, a a forest management company which manages a number of large-scale, sustainable teak forests in Brazil. Floresteca SA is accredited by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and operates in accordance with international guidelines on sustainability.

Floresteca’s forestry management and business policies preclude any involvement in businesses outside of the agricultural and forestry sectors. Floresteca also guarantees no involvement in activities that deplete the rain forest or natural hard wood forests, or which displace indigenous people, flora or fauna. Floresteca has also put in place a comprehensive water monitoring system in its plantations.

Social engagement of the Quadris Environmental Fund

Floresteca SA provides employment for 1,600 Brazilian forestry workers at wages that are 30% higher than the average agricultural wage in the region. Workers also receive social security contributions, access to healthcare facilities and a range of other benefits.

Life cycle to date of the Quadris Environmental Fund

The Quadris Environmental Fund was set up in 2001, since when the price of shares in the fund have steadily risen.

Due to the nature of the forestry business, a Quadris Environmental Fund investment should be regarded as an investment for the longer term. Timber is one of only three commodities which have risen in price, in real terms, over 10, 50 and 100 years, the other 2 being oil and gold. However, while the latter 2 are subject to price volatility, timber is not.

Demand for Timber

Based on research carried out in 2003 by the United National Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO), demand for timber already outstrips supply by some 340m cubic metres in 2010, and demand will outstrip supply by considerably more by 2020. Separate analyses predict this situation will continue for decades to come. This is predicted to result in a continuing increase in the price of timber in general. The World Bank Commodity Price Index shows that the price of hardwoods has increased by 8% per annum compound since 2001.

On this basis, Quadris recommends including forestry within a diverse, balanced investment portfolio as a means of reducing risk in the long-term, with an environmentally and socially positive investment that does not compromise on profitability.
