Families in the UK are £6 a week worse off than a year ago, according to new figures published this week by supermarket chain Asda. Savings meanwhile are, on average, adequate for just 14 days of living costs.

A basic rate taxpayer currently needs a savings account that will pay 3.75%, just to beat inflation, according to new data released today. The 40% taxpayer is in an even tighter corner. More and more investors are turning away from cash and looking at stocks and shares, for better growth potential.

Men retiring this year will have pensions two-thirds larger than women in the same position, according to Prudential. The average pension income for a man taking his pension in 2010 will be £19,593 per year, compared with £12,169 per year for a woman.

Norway’s national pension fund has sold off Euro 1.8 bn in tobacco shares, citing ethical reasons. The individual investor can also opt for ethical investments, with over 100 ethical funds now available.
